Whale Shark Tour FAQs

When is whale shark season in Cancún?

The whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean runs from mid-June to mid-September, with peak sightings in July and August. Tours operate weather-permitting.

Where do whale shark tours depart from?

We offer departures from Cancún (Marina Aquatours), Puerto Juárez and Isla Mujeres. Private and semi-private options are available.

Is it safe to swim with whale sharks?

Yes. Whale sharks are filter feeders — completely harmless to humans. You stay on the surface with snorkel gear, accompanied at all times by a certified Mexican-government-permitted guide.

How long is the tour?

Total duration is 6–8 hours including transport. Actual time in the water with the sharks is 30–60 minutes (Mexican regulations limit each swimmer to 2 swims of about 5 minutes each).

What is included?

Hotel pickup, boat ride, snorkel gear, life jacket (mandatory), light breakfast on board, fresh ceviche lunch, drinks, and certified bilingual guide.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You should be comfortable in deep open water. Life jackets are mandatory under Mexican law, and a guide enters the water with each pair of swimmers.
